Thesis Title: Time and Relative Dimensions in Sound: The Music of Science Fiction Television (tentative)
About
I am a first year PhD student in music theory at the University of Texas at Austin. I received my masters in music theory from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH, and my bachelor of arts in music from Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. My masters thesis is titled "A Fistful of Drama: Musical Form in the 'Dollars' Trilogy," and discuses musical form and projection as an undercurrent of dramatic action in the films 'A Fistful of Dollars,' 'For a Few Dollars More,' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.'
I am currently doing extensive research on the British show 'Doctor Who,' focusing specifically on the representation of the science fiction (SF) genre in the show's music. My focus is limited to the original run, 1963-1989, with specific attention on the avant-garde electronic scoring of the first season.
My dissertation will (hopefully) focus on SF television music; influences, normative features, legacy, traits, and characteristics. Current shows on my list to research include 'Doctor Who,' 'Futurama,' 'The Jetsons,' 'Blakes 7,' 'Survivors,' 'Star Trek,' 'Battlestar Gallactica,' and a few others. The list keeps growing and growing. I am also becoming increasingly interested in SF parody, particularly Futurama's parodies of Star Trek episodes.
